What can happen when your dogs nails are too long? what harm can it cause them?

My dog is 3 years old and he has been limping and we are concerned that it might be his nails because he doesn't show any signs of pain. Last time we took him to petsmart and he got some of his nails cliped but the guy told us that he couldn't finish because my dog had scratched him. So we haven't done them since. I would like to know if the nails can be the reason that my dog is limping. What can happen when your dogs nails are too long? what harm can it cause them?
Yes, it def could be the reason why but it could also be as simple as a bindi in his pad...have a feel all throught the spaces in his pads. He could have been stepped on etc

to answer what can happen is below:

Dogs dew claws can grow to long and curl up into the skin, it is very painful and can cause irritation/laceration to the skin.

The lower nails can grow into a curl and around and up into the pads of the paw

The nails can become infected.

They can cause the toes to spread out almost. (if this makes sense)

The nails can cause the dog to walk with a limp and if the dog limps over a long period of time it can cause permanent damage.

If the dogs nails are too long it can get more caught/snag on things easier and this can cause damage to the toes.

Be aware that dew claws (some dogs have them removed when younger) dont touch the ground so these do not ware down at all so might have to be trimmed more often.

Always use dog claw trimmers not scissors! generally every six weeks they might need a little trim

the longer you leave them the harder it is to cut them and the more uncomfortable it can be for your dog.

do some research on clipping there toes they have blood vessels so you need to know how much to trim them. try and get someone to help you a vet? a breeder etc if you dog is difficult.

You should be able to see clearly or at least feel the toes or nails and see where the problem is coming from?

good luck..

Yes, long nails could make it hard for your dog to walk, he/she could slide and break a toe. It can also cause cuts and scrapes when you dog just simply has an itch, which could get infected I might add.

Dogs have high tolerance of pain so you may not know he/she is but could be in a lot.

I'd get them clipped regularly.

It is actually very cheap to let your vet clip them.
in my opinion, it could be, and it might not me from the 4 nails you do see it might be from the fifth one that hangs, if that one does get to long it starts to dig in to there side of there foot. (that is if your dog has the fifth nail).... my dog lola was limping on her right side till i figured out that the nail was digging into her skin. we took her to the vet so he could cut her nails properly. i myself get really nerves not to cut to short afraid of hurting her. well i hoped that helped. and if she does have a fifth nail my suggest to you would be take your doggy to the vet might have arthritis.
Yes too long nails can cause limping.. if the nails grow TOO long, they can actually curl inward and grow into the foot.

If you dont feel comfortable trimming your dog's nails, then take him to your vet or groomer and have it done.

I hope you were not paying petsmart to do his nails. Stopping because the dog ';scratched'; him is a poor excuse. I worked as a bather at a groom shop.. nails got DONE, regardless of how the dog was acting.
Please dont let one bad experience prevent you from having his nails trimmed.

Take him to a vet or a different groomer and let them do it.

Learn to do it youself on a regular basis. Have your vet show you the proper way to trim the nails.

They can become painful to walk on when they get too

long...also they can break or get torn off and cause extreme pain for your your dog.
It can possibly be the nails because untrimmed nails can really make walking very uncomfortable for your dog.Long nails snag easily on carpet, upholstery, and even your clothes. Snags can lead to a tear, an injury that can be bloody as well as painful.

There are some ways for you to do the nail clipping on your own. Maybe your dog is uncomfortable that somebody she doesnt know is working on her toes.

0h. im 13. i let my dogs nails grow too long. he's small so he would jump of of furniture. he broke 1 nail all the way to the skin and he was in pain. it healed in about a week after all of his limping. we cut them now. dog's nails are filled with this sensitive stuff and it hurts them depending on the way you cut it. it only hurts for a few secs then the pain goes away.
Absolutely , you have to get him to a vet and get them clipped ASAP dogs can hurt themselves real bad with long nails as they tend to get lodged in clothing as well as make it very difficult to walk A vet will be more suitable than pet shops
maybe maybe not

i would suggest clipping them first because

it is very hard to walk with long toenails

  • How to sand hardwood floor with too many nails hammered into it?

I don't know what kind of flooring you're working with but if it was me I would get an orbital sander and start out with about 300 grit sandpaper, higher if you have a lot of wood to remove, and then work down to about 150 grit or so depending on how smooth and how much time you are willing to put into it. Remember to keep moving or you will have dips in the flooring from taking too much away. As for the nails I would get about a foot long 2 by 4 and wrap it in a cloth to soften the impact of the hammer and drive them back when you get to them, make sure that it's got a good flat surface, you can use the sander smooth it out. After all that work is done put the wax or sealer on, let it dry and repeat as needed. How to sand hardwood floor with too many nails hammered into it?
I went back a read this one and found I'd told you wrong about the numbers on the sand paper and told you to work to 150 grit instead of up to 1500. 150 is alot coarser than 1500 which is almost smooth. So if you get a chance let me know how it went. Thanks.

for the best look you should pull all the nails you can and back fill the holes with wood putty.I know that is alot of work but it will look great..after you back fill the holes just sand flush and stain..I just did my own floors about a month ago . good luck and i hope it works out for you..
You'll have to countersink every nail and putty it prior to sanding. If a few reappear do again but hit them with a little sandpaper by hand this time

    .
you will have to counter sink the nails or they will just tear up the sand paper
never too many nails hammer nails back down careful not to dent the wood if u do put wet rag and an iron on it iorn on wet rag till it rises then sand flush
You have to counter sink the nails. this will take some time but it's worth it. get yourself a nail setting punch. It's kinda like a center punch. set the nail 1/8 '; below the wood surface. after that you need to purchace some crayons in the color that match's the wood.it's a wood tone wax filler. good luck and happy sanding.

Is it bad for your nails to always have them painted?

No. I used to keep mine painted all the time when I was working. Some polishes just seem to stain a bit but that just takes some buffing to get it off if it bothers you that much. I don't bother any more and I do break my nails more now.Is it bad for your nails to always have them painted?
    Well.

I always, and I mean always, have mine painted.

    And nothing has happened.

No cracking or thinning or anything.

:]Is it bad for your nails to always have them painted?
    nope!
yes it is eventually they will get a yellowish tint - there are days your have to let them breath. same with fake nails those things are so bad for your nails they cause all kind of fungus and bacteria!
    NO
I don't think so. I also believe that paint give nails protection, make them strong and don't break easily. Nails look better with color. Sadly i don't have nails...they started breaking when i was 4 . I feel bad just a lil bit and i have never been into a nail spa. No nails on my hands and feet but the skin on my fingers is very strong. Let me stop before i start crying. Enjoy your nice painted nails.
yes it is actually. Espescially if u are always changing the nail polish.

    But it doesnt stop me!
No theres nothing worng with that at all. It looks good.
no. i don't think so. if it were a problem, i think they'd have it on the bottle somewhere about overusing it.

Had a c-section and my toe nails went yellow? It's growing out now, but what causes that?

the pain meds?Had a c-section and my toe nails went yellow? It's growing out now, but what causes that?
hmm, nope I had one too with pain meds and mine never went yellow actually sounds more like a fungal problem more than anythingHad a c-section and my toe nails went yellow? It's growing out now, but what causes that?
    What you experienced was jaundice.

It is caused by hepatal (liver) problems and/or failure, which could have been caused by the pain meds, if you overdosed.

    Go see a doctor for a follow-up.

    Get well soon.

Yes, the entertainment value of the convention seems to be the most important factors as to determining the next Pres for the dems.
