You need plier type trimmers, cut them where you normally would next to the quick and genly pull the part in the pad out. He will probably need antibiotics from the vet and maybe a vet to get the nails out of the pad.Great Pyrenees has a nail that has grown so much in the past 3 weeks that it has went into the pad ! Help?
if it's pierced the pad, it's time to have the vet trim the nail. You need to check these daily if they are growing that fast. You're invited to join our Yahoo group:

Sounds like someone missed the dew claws when the others were clipped. I used to be a dog groomer, and if a nail was only slightly grown in, I'd cut the nail and remove the piece in the pad, clean with hydrogen peroxide. If it is embedded pretty far, get a Vet to do it. IF you are unsure, get a Vet to do it.
i agree with tks also you might want to consider having them surgically removed as they will always be a problem if the vet recommends against surgery you could try the protective nail covers people put on their cats they come in large dog sizes.and last but not least if surgery is out of the question file them down once a week.
you might want to let the vet's office take care of this since it has grown into his pad. when you cut the nail it will most likely be painful and may leave an open wound that needs to be treated by a vet. good luck and hope he feels better soon
my springer had this problem with one of her hind dew claws and the vet ended up taking it off. they dont need them for any reason(my younger springer was born without them)would save time and stress or pain on the dog to have it removed
If those dewclaws continue to be a problem or you can not keep up with clipping them, I would recommend removing them. When they grow into the pad not only is it extremely painful but it can lead to infection.
Clip it like you normally would and pull it out of the pad. If its only been three weeks it shouldn't be too far into the pad. make sure you have kwik stop handy because you might cut into the quick. If the pad bleeds it won't be very much, just hold pressure on it and the blood should stop in a few minutes.
I know pyrenees are supposed to have two dew claws on each hind foot. Unless the dog is going to be shown, they aren't important. If he isn't a show dog you can ask the vet about having them removed before one is injured. It can be done but it requires general anesthesia and a short recovery period.
