I have a pet bird and it's nails ARE BIG should I cut it's nails or should I take it to the vet?

so the vet can cut the bird's nails?????I have a pet bird and it's nails ARE BIG should I cut it's nails or should I take it to the vet?
First take it to a Avian Vet to have the nails cut shorter and have the Vet show you how to file them with a nail file when they start to get pointed. I do bird grooming and it isnt hard to keep their nail down once a Vet trims them, and you doing it will have you the cost of another visit.

If you have good eyesight up close, and nail clippers, you can do it yourself. All you need to cut off is the tip.If you try to cut more, you risk cutting into the blood line. The bird will not bleed to death, but all the blood will scare you. When you cut the nails, have some flour, the kind you bake with, handy. If you do draw blood, stick the claw into the flour, and put gentle pressure on the nail.It will eventually stop. You can insert the bleeding nail into a bar of soap too.Of course, nothing is better than a good avian vet,but it can get costly as the nails need to be clipped every 6 weeks or so.Be sure to clip the wings too.It is not cruel. You will have a much tamer bird because of it.It is safer for the bird too.Good Luck.
You should take him to the vet just incase.
vet=safe
If you are nervous, do let the vet show you how to trim its nails. One must be careful not to cut too close lest one hit the blood vessel in the nail. Once you trim the nail with nail scissors or a nail trimmer, you can file (gently) to get rid of rough edges. In the wild birds' talons are naturally ';filed'; by tree branches or other rough objects on which they roost. However, don't get sandpaper-covered perches - they play Old Scratch (no pun intended) with your bird's feet.
Please don't cut your birds toe nails unless you know exactly what you are doing because it is easy to cut to much causing major bleeding.

There are perches available to help keep the nails trimmed and I reccommend getting one.

If your bird is a nun or a spice finch the nails will be a never ending problem and you will want to learn how to cut the nails so that you won't be spending a lot of money to have someone else do it for you.
To the vet its alot safer for your bird or not you might accidental amputate something (Poor Birdy) =)
the vet can definatly cut its nails i have two birds and

i know how to clip them but one mess up and the bird

can bleed to DETH! so please, for the birds sake,

GO TO THE VET!
You could also get a cement type perch for your bird to stand on sometimes. This helps keep their nails ground down. Works for my parakeets and canary, and I know it works especially well for larger birds.
I worked at a vet for a while and one of the vets wnet a macaw. He put it under anaesthetic and used a little machine t gently file its claws and beak. Perhaps that would be the best way to go. Better safe than sorry dont you think?
If you wrap him with a towel covering his head you can clip one foot at a time. Just cut the tips because they have veins that run through the nail and he can bleed terribly. You could always call PetSmart. What kind of bird is he?
do it yourself it is less money
vet
for the firdt time u migth want to have it done proffesionaly and then u can see how short they cut it so u haev a reference point when it grows back in. so u know what the ';safe'; length would be
you need to trim the birds nails before they have problems with their nails and also their wings every time you see the bird's nails growing a little too long you need to cut them......if you don't know how to do this then take it to a vet that deals with birds
