I was trimming my chihuhua's nails. When I was pressing down to cut a nail, my dog gasped and started shaking and whimpering. I thought I hurt her. I let her down and immediately got her a treat.
She seemed very happy just to be on the ground- running around as if her nail didn't hurt. Later, I examined the nail and noticed the trimmers didn't even make a mark on the nail. Did my dog trick me?Dog nail trimming question: when you are about to cut the quick does the dog feel it?
Yes she did. Dogs are great actors %26amp; very manipulative in getting their way. It wouldn't hurt until the quick was actually cut %26amp; if the quick was really cut.Dog nail trimming question: when you are about to cut the quick does the dog feel it?
She was'nt hurt. My dog did the same thing when we cut her nails, but my brothers are very forceful and did it anyway. She was just fine afterwards and we gave her a treat. I think I also remember going to a vet and she told us that trimming a dogs nails does not hurt them as long as you don't cut them too far up.
Using the traditional dog nail cutter can hurt when used.
They squeeze down on to the nail and if to close to the quick can hurt.
It could be that she had been hurt before when having her nails done and wanted no part of having them done again.
I grind my dogs nails and have never had an issue of hurting them.

No. When you're about to clip the quick, the dog feels the pressure.
