Is it safe to cut the nails of a 4 mo. old min pin? I was told by the vet ';NO'; but his nails r long, ANY SUGG

Why did the vet say no? Did they give you any reason? Is it safe to cut the nails of a 4 mo. old min pin? I was told by the vet ';NO'; but his nails r long, ANY SUGG
Oh for heaven's sake - any good breeder cuts their nails when they are nursing. Sometimes vets don't know everything about puppies...

Just go to the drugstore and get a baby nail clipper - the flip and press kind sold for infants in the baby section. Just nip off the little hooks. I find that it is always necessary to put a loop of ribbon in the hole in the handle, so you have more to hold onto - I cannot understand why they make them so small! It's not as if the BABY's going to be using it!

I use this kind as long as it's possible to get purchase on the nail, and can often shape the larger ones with it so they're nice and round. But it's very safe to trim the tiny puppy claws that way - just really be careful so as not to quick them, or they wil have a rightful argument about letting you do it again the next time.

Good for you for being such an attentive owner - and asking for help elsewhere...Is it safe to cut the nails of a 4 mo. old min pin? I was told by the vet ';NO'; but his nails r long, ANY SUGG
It will be fine but be very careful. I have a Min Pin and they have black toenails so you can't see where the vein is. If you cut too short it will bleed and it will hurt him because there are nerves in there, as well.

Make sure you use clippers especially designed for dogs. Get a cold, wet washcloth and have it on hand in case you do slip and trim it too short. You can apply it as a compress to help stop the bleeding. Next, clip just the VERY TIP, just to dull the nail. The best technique for doing this is have another person hold your dog while you clip because they squirm. Have the person take the palm of their hand and place it on the 'elbow' joint and then wrap the hand around the leg. This prevents him from jerking his leg back. It will lock it in place. Be very careful.

Edit: congrats on your choice of dog! They are very stubborn but they are wonderful little cuddle bugs! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I'd be glad to answer any questions you may have.
it should be safe, our vet cut our dog's nails at two months old. but it was the vet that cut it, not us. why did your vet say no? maybe you can get your dog's nails cut professionally at the vets, perhaps the vet is afraid you might accidentally hurt the dog because it's still tiny and will try to squirm around?
That's ob surd! I trim my puppy's nails at the age of 8 weeks. I can't understand why your vet would say that? Doesn't sound like an intelligent Vet to me. I'd find a new Vet that knows more about the care of peoples pets. No unless maybe he was thinking that you'd take your puppy to a grooming salon and expose it to other dogs before your puppy's vaccines have kicked in.
Yeah, those nails can be pretty sharp. You could try filing them down some. It might take some time, you might want a friend to help you hold the puppy while you work on his nails. He might get a bit mouthy if you've never messed with his feet before.
the vet will do it for you . the reason he said no to you is that its dangerous to do it yourself if you cut too close they can bleed to death
if you do it VERY gradually, it should be fine.

when you walk him, walk him on the sidewalk quite a bit, it will really wear them down ! :)
Yes; You can. I've seen a 8 week old puppy get his nails trimmed. As long as you know how to clip the nails properly, It's fine. I've never heard a vet say no to nail clipping.. weird..
Of course it is safe. When I use to breed Dobermans, many years ago, I used to start clipping the pups nails with a finger nail clipper when they were 3 weeks old!
how come the vet said no? i dont think its harmless as long as u cut the nails with the right tool and right length. be sure to ask ur vet y they said no.
If the vet said no then no, if you are worried about it then ask the vet to tell you why not to do it
It is safe. I had my pups nails cut for the first time at that age becuz she was getting them caught on everything and crying...so yes get them cut at Petsmart they do it for free the first time!
Yes, I've trimmed nails on 2-3 week olds. There is no age restrictions.
If the vet said no then don't do it..
