I went to the doctors with what I thought was a fungal nail infection, however the test results that came back said it was normal.
I know my nail is not normal!!! It has deep ridges from side to side which are unpleasant to look at.
I looked around on the internet and it appears what I have is called Beau's Lines. It terrified me when I read about it, it said it could be due to syphillis or cancer or all sorts!!
I've had this for a long time- around 2 years. Each time the nail grows (which it does very slowly) I get a new set of Beau's Lines. I am a vegetarian and I looked at what else it could be and apparently it could be due to an iron or zinc deficiency. I refuse outright to eat meat and I don't have time (or space, living in university residences) to cook decent meals. I've tried multivitamins but I find pills so difficult to take.
What can I do?! Please help.I think I have Beau's lines on my nail. Why could this be and how can I treat it?
i thonk you have to go to your doctor or another doc to get a second opinion cause it doesnt sound like something to be ignored. here is something I copied from wikipedia - hope it helps! :)
Beau's lines are deep grooved lines that run from side to side on the fingernail. They may look like indentations or ridges in the nail plate. There are several reasons that humans get Beau's lines. It is believed that there is a temporary cessation of cell division in the nail matrix. This may be caused by an infection or problem in the nail fold, where the nail begins to form, or it may be caused by an injury to that area. Some other reasons for these lines include: trauma, coronary occlusion, hypocalcaemia, skin disease and may be a sign of systemic disease. It may also be caused by an illness of the body, such as diabetes, certain drugs, such as those used in chemotherapy or even malnutrition. This condition of the nail was named by a French physician, Joseph Honor茅 Simon Beau (1806鈥?865), who first described it in 1846.
Beau's lines should be distinguished from Muehrcke lines of the fingernails. While Beau's lines are actual ridges and indentations in the nail plate, Muehrcke lines are areas of hypopigmentation without palpable ridges.
A researcher found Beau's lines in the fingernails of 6 divers following a deep saturation dive to a pressure equal to 335 meters of sea water, and in 2 of 6 divers following a similar dive to 305 meters.[1]
